Massive letters on reflective green signs, offering direction and distance to everywhere–if you’ve driven a vehicle in the United States, you’ve seen SAA, which was designed in 1980 as a clone of the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) series of highway signage fonts. Offering a more ovular take on its older cousin SNV, and becoming a counterpart to that typeface as the two basic typeface styles exhibited on most vehicle license plates in the United States and Canada, SAA was digitized and made commercially available by URW.
Like most Western highway signage fonts, SAA is a simple and clean sans, consisting primarily of all-caps options, although the ‘SAA Series EM D’ weight contains lowercase designs as well. Styles start tall and condensed, and move through to a wider option by the last weight
